He was predeceased by: his parents, William Schwartz and Amy Schwartz (Fenton); his parents-in-law, Phillip and Anna Beaver; his brother Don Schwartz; and his siblings-in-law, Harvey Beaver (Ann), Anthony Beaver, Peter Cook, Ester Ott (Henry), Marjorie Frie (Leo), Katherine Beaver and Elisabeth Schwartz.

He is survived by: his wife Mary H. Schwartz of Dubuque; his children, Pamela Aldeman (Mark) of Potosi, WI, Patricia Gaherty (Tim) of Dubuque, Joan Anderson (Bob) of Lockport, IL, Karen Fitzgerald (Scott Meyer) of Dubuque, William Schwartz (Amy) of Dubuque, Mary Beth Gassman (Mike) of Rock Island, IL and Sally Daack (Bryan) of Dubuque; and his brothers-in-law, Gerald, Ray, Kenneth, Jerome Beaver and Paul Cook. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren, three great grandchildren.
