He is survived by: his wife Ruth Carstens of Dow City; his children, Gordon Carstens (Rhonda Miller) of College Station, Texas, Don Carstens (Jeanie Wood) of Denison and Sandy Herback (Greg) of Gardnerville, Nevada; his grandchildren, Sophie (Adam White), Jake, Lauren, Garret (Sarah), Ezra, Hannah and Nick (Theresa); and his siblings-in-law, Leonard Ahrenholtz (Shirley), Dee Ahrenholtz, Karen Ahrenholtz, Martha Camden (Bob) and Marie Jennings. He is also survived by 3 great-grandchildren.
