She was predeceased by: her parents, Fred Simpson and Victoria Simpson (Curry); her former spouses, James David Penrod and Glen Paul Heins; her husband Victor LaVern Derr; her granddaughters, Amanda Ellison and Amy Van Pelt; and her sister Barbara Granamann.
She is survived by: her children, Mike Penrod (Ann), Susan Fields of Orlando, Mary Hoskins (Jeff), Fred Heins and David Heins; her grandchildren, Jessica Welch (Ryan), Dylan Heins (Kari), Andrew Heins, Jake Shannon of Williamstown and Tyler Hoskins; her great grandchildren, Jase Welch, Riley Welch, Aaron Heins and Abraham Heins; and her sisters, LaVonne Miller of Texas and Dorothy Meyer of Texas. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
A memorial has been established in her memory for the Donnellson Library Genealogy Department.
