He was predeceased by : his parents, Joseph Cardenas and Maria Cardenas; his former life partner Alice Cardenas; and his wife Arlene Cardenas (Chia). He is survived by : his children, Anthony Cardenas (Rose), David Negrete (Kayla) and Mary Fran Downs (Daniel); his grandchildren, Joseph (Julie Cunningham), Andrea, Tonia Cardenas, Brennan and Brock Negrete; his great grandchildren, A. J. (Hannah Ogle), Lejla, Miguel, Meleck Cardenas, Rae and Luca Negrete; and his great great grandchildren, Kiya Cardenas, Charlie and Brooklyn. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held on Thursday, June 27th 2024 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Hamilton's Funeral Home (605 Lyon St, Des Moines, IA 50309). A Mass of Christian burial was held on Friday, June 28th 2024 at 10:00 AM at the St. Anthony Catholic Church (15 Indianola Rd, Des Moines, IA 50315).

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown in appreciation of their care of Louis.
