He was predeceased by: his parents, John L. Connolly and Therese L Connolly (Sweeney); and his son Eric Connolly. He is survived by: his wife Roberta Nieland of Delhi, IA; his daughter Carrie Jackson (Doug) of Marion, IA; his stepson Zach LeGrand of Guttenberg, IA; his grandchildren, Lauren, Ava and Erica Jackson; and his siblings, Mark Connolly (Mary Kay) of Provitan, IA, Ellen Hosch (Mark) of Eldridge, IA, Joyce Rogers (Jim) of Iowa City, IA and Jill Connolly (Ron Rooney) of Dubuque, IA. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers a James M. Connolly memorial has been established.
