She was predeceased by: her parents, Cecil Burks and Ruth Burks (Craig); and her siblings, Harold Burks, Bill Burks, James Burks and Anita Smith.

She is survived by: her husband Harry "Peps" Carter; her children, Debbie Smith, Steve Strout, Donna Hoffner (Terrell), David Carter (Beth), Lee Carter, Alan Carter and Paul Carter (Gena); her grandchildren, Brayden Smith, Carlton Smith, Eric Smith, Nicole Hutchison, Katie Hutchison, Austin Hoffner, Dalton Hoffner, David Strout, Whitley Carter, Brian Carter and Mathew Carter; and her brother Jerry Burks (Kathy). She is also survived by several great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held on Wednesday, March 12th 2025 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Runge Mortuary and Crematory (838 E Kimberly Rd, Davenport, IA 52807). A funeral service was held on Thursday, March 13th 2025 at 10:00 AM at the Runge Mortuary Chapel (838 E Kimberly Rd, Davenport, IA 52807).

Memorials may be made in Mary's name to the Wounded Warrior Project.
