He was predeceased by: his parents, Leo Nelson and Ardena Masterson (Denker); his brother Gilbert Wayne; his wives, Evelyn and Alice; his grandson Jim Masterson; and also Patty Knaack.

He is survived by: his siblings, Cigar Store, Restaurant of Davenport, Vending, Case Plant and Rosalie Ellen Petersen of Grimes, Iowa; and his children, Carol Zindel (Harold) of Davenport, Bernard of Davenport, Donald Bettendorf (Sharon) of Terry, Davenport, Ruth Soedt (Ken) and David (Maria). He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren; and Alice's daughter.
