He was predeceased by: his parents, James Smith and Cora Smith (Hampel); his siblings, Lester Smith (Helen), Ralph Smith (Elsie), Wayne Smith (Laura), Elaine Wedemeyer (Walt) and Lois Eilts (Paul); his nephews, James, Gene Smith, John Smith, Dean Eilts and Lynn Wedemeyer; his niece Jan Rosenquist; his parents-in-law, Curt and Frances Anderson; and his brother-in-law Merald Hein.

He is survived by: his wife Alice Anderson; his sons, Doug Smith (Cindy), Hiawatha and Steve Smith (Carrie); his grandchildren, Mindy Johnson (Eric) of Lincoln, Neb., Nathan Smith, Jesse Smith (Ashley), Stacia Petersen (Brady) of Bristol, Conn., Shawn Smith (Kayla), Crookston, Minn and Katie Forney (Brad); his great grandchildren, Camryn, Gavin Johnson, Josie, Evie Smith, Nicole, Lucas Smith, Jensen, Curt Petersen, Noelle Smith, Hazel and Theodore Forney; and his sister-in-law Anne Hein. He is also survived by many nieces, and nephews.
