With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Bertha Smith of Council Bluffs, Iowa, who passed away on June 8, 2024 at the age of 98. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.
She was predeceased by: her parents, Harold A. Ballenger and Bertha A. Ballenger of Council Bluffs; her great-grandparent Thomas Thickstun; her siblings, Lylian Walton, William A. Ballenger and Harold D. Ballenger; and her son Peter M. Smith.
She is survived by: her husband Melvin Leon Smith; her children, Dr. Thomas Smith of Holdrege, NE, David Smith of Lincoln, NE and Lucy Forster-Smith of Wellesley, MA; her children-in-law, Shirley Smith, Dr. Nancy Hakel-Smith and Thomas Forster-Smith; and her grandchildren, Dr. Mark Smith of Rochester, MN, Dr. Bradford Smith, Dr. Rashelle Hoffman of Omaha, NE, Dr. Christopher Forster-Smith of Baltimore, MD, Mara Forster-Smith of Seattle, WA and Anna Forster-Smith of Taos, NM. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews.
