He was predeceased by: his parents, Herman Peter and Mary Esther Sievers (Barnes); his grandson Ryan Hagan; his siblings, Beatrice Knudsen (Leonard), Ila Knudsen (Nels) and Lyle Sievers (Shirley); and also, Harry Olesen Jr. (Evelyn), Howard Olesen (Helen), Naomi Golay (Ernest), Earl Olesen (Jessie), Ramona Richardson (Charles), William Olesen (Barb), Robert Olesen (Jerri), Jens Olesen, Ronald Patrick and Howard Herron.
He is survived by: his wife Claribel Sievers of Coon Rapids; his children, Thomas Sievers (Debbie) of Coon Rapids, Cindy Hagan (Michael) of Carroll, Nancy Taylor (Scott) of Estherville and Joseph Sievers (Lisa) of Taos; his grandchildren, Eric Sievers (Amanda) of Norwalk, Todd Sievers of Norwalk, Adam Sievers of Audubon, Tyler Hagan of Coon Rapids, Matthew Taylor (Cassandra) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Benjamin Sievers (Sarah) of Gardner, Kansas and Amy Sievers of Taos; his great grandchildren, Taylor Howard, Natalie, Emily Sievers of Norwalk, Thomas and Lucas Sievers of Gardner Kansas; and his parents-in-law, Eunice Herron of Coon Rapids, Joan Strautman (James Sr.) of Carroll, Max Olesen (Karen) of Coon Rapids and Maryann Olson of Vail. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In June 2015, Merlin became a resident of the Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids, Iowa after being diagnosed in 2006 with Parkinson's disease.
