He was predeceased by: his parents, James Louis and Esther Smothers (Sammon); his son Lester; his brothers, Fred Smothers, Jack Smothers and James Smothers; his niece Jodie Gallager; his nephews, Todd Hess and Wesley Robson; and his father-in-law Wilber Robson.
He is survived by: his wife Janice "Jan" Keenan; his children, Cindy Irvin (Mark) of Waukee, Connie Smothers Richardson (Rusty) of Waukee, Louis Smothers (Julie) of Waukee, Shawn Smothers (Amy) of Waukee and Megan Tindle (Jeff) of Montezuma; his grandchildren, Amber Harris (Edwin), Christopher Irvin (Kaurissa), Lance Irvin (Taylor Woebbbeking), Joshua Ellis (Becca), Richie Richardson, Ethan Smothers, Austin Smothers, Nathan Smothers, Brooke Smothers, Abby Smothers, Gavin Tindle, Sawyer Tindle and Peyton Tindle; his great grandchildren, Cade Harris, Deven Harris, Breeya Harris, Eleanor Irvin, Jasper Irvin and Paisley Riddle; his brothers, Bill Smothers (Charlene) of Marshalltown, Bud Smothers (Carole) of Grinnell and Ed Smothers of Newton; his siblings-in-law, Virginia Smothers of Montezuma, Linda Kaye Smothers of Newton, Pat Smothers of Montezuma, Bill Robson (Ruth Ann) of Linden, Joe Robson (Joy) of Colfax and Caren Clevenger (Phil) of Newton; and his mother-in-law Coleen Robson of Ankeny. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
