He was predeceased by: his parents, Casper Helwig and Agnes Helwig (Lesnar); and his siblings, Julian, Chester, Arthur and Marie.

He is survived by: his wife Ramona Manska; his daughter Val; his son-in-law John; his son Lance; his daughter-in-law Heidi of Portland Oregon; his son Blaine; his daughter-in-law Betty of Austin, Texas; his son Todd; and his daughter-in-law Karen of Austin, Texas.. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and his sister.

A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, May 22nd 2025 at 10:30 AM at the St. Thomas More Catholic Parish (1700 8th St S, Brookings, SD 57006).
