He was predeceased by: his parents, Arnold Petersen and Naomi Petersen (Hansen). He is survived by: his wife Karen Nelson; his children, Nicki Petersen (Tim Nielsen) of Clinton and Bryan Petersen (Renae) of Brookings, SD; his brother Ron Petersen (Linda) of Clinton; and his pets, Toby and Wrigley.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
