He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Bernie Dykstra and Minnie Dykstra (Schipper); his wife Donna M. DeWeerdt; his children, Donell VanLoo (Neal) of Mainville, OH, Robin McKee (Jim) of Fulton, IL, Rick Dykstra (Linda) of Lancaster, CA and Ron Dykstra (Karin) of Clinton, IA; and his brothers, Bernard Dykstra (Doris) of Clinton, IA. and Sebert Dykstra. He was also cherished by nine grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter.

Memorials have been established to First Reformed Church and Parkinson's Foundation.
