He was predeceased by: his parents, Millard Sr. Nelson and Myrtle Moon Nelson; his wife LaVonne; his siblings, John Nelson and Judith Fossen; his grandson Bryce Biedermann; his grandson-in-law Brad Berns; his nephews, Thomas and James Fossen; and his foster son Charles Mancil.
He is survived by: his children, Ann Rowland (Ron) of Des Moines, Linda Martin (Mic) of Decorah, Mark Nelson (Denise) of Clermont and Laurie Biedermann (Jim) of Decorah; and his grandchildren, Karin Martin-Hiner (Jason), Carie Fisher (Cory), Andrew Rowland (Valarie), Claire Martin, Seth Rowland (Carrie), Bridget Berns (John Dundee), Kirstin Lerch (Cody), Scott Biedermann (Mary), Nathan Rowland and Chad Nelson (Sabrina Stenson). He is also survived by thirty great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
