He is survived by: his sibling-in-law Jean Tighe; his children, Tonya Krohn (Fred) and Mark Shanks; his granddaughters, Erin Scanlan (Chuck) and Kate Shanks; his siblings, Juanita Owens, Myrtle Briner and Larry Shanks; and his siblings-in-law, Annie Shanks, Jennie Shanks, Judy Shanks, Linda Shanks and Ed Tighe (Kay). He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Animal Rescue League of Des Moines, Iowa.
