He was predeceased by: his parents, Clyde Bates and Ena Bates (Rolando); his former wife Mary Bates; his great grandchild Addison Munday; his children, Jeff Bates and Connie Bates; and his brothers, Bill, Russell and Bob Bates.
He is survived by: his former wife Mary Vonevich; his wife Marge Meyer; his children, Carla Bates, Tom Bates (Diana Gordin) and Brian Bates (Stephanie); and his stepchildren, Cynthia Cowan (Gregg), Robert Meyer (Shawna) and Allison Haas (Hap). He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and numerous extended family.
Memorials may be given to Mystic Community Center, Hospice of the Midwest, or the Alzheimer's Association.
