She was predeceased by: her parents, Harry Engel and Ione Engel. She is survived by: her daughter Sara Hoopes; her siblings, Vincent Engel (Fred), Joel Engel (Cindy) and Marilyn Mellin (Howard); and also Harper. She is also survived by nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family and will be donated to Shelburne Farms, an educational nonprofit in Vermont, Debbie's favorite state.

“I am so sorry for your loss, she was the sweetest to me... I got sick and was not at work for 3 months. We talked and became friends before that and talked about life, when I came back from the hospital and being gone. I had a message on my desk with some candy she had left me, and it said when you see this please stop down and so I can see you!. she was so excited to see me, we chatted for awhile. she gave me the biggest hug, she was so concerned that I would not ever be back.. -Lori Clymer”
