He was predeceased by: his parents, Stanley Gehrke and Helen Gehrke (Lorenz); his stepgranddaughter Abigail Buckner; his nephew Tom Trzaskos; and his brother-in-law Loren Knief.
He is survived by: his former wife Linda Miller; his wife Diana Cooke of Cedar Falls; his children, Matthew Jerome Gehrke (Mina Kim) of Philadelphia, PA and Sarah Welch (Aaron) of Oklahoma City, OK; his stepchildren, Todd Buckner (Julie) of Shakopee, MN, Scott Buckner of Cedar Falls and Molly Wertz (Matthew) of Waterloo; his grandsons, Milo, Eli Welch, Ben and Jack Gehrke; his stepgrandchildren, Matthew, Allison Buckner, Landon, Grady and Eva Wertz; and his sisters, Sandra Knief of Cedar Falls, Patricia Knudson (John) of Denver and Pamela Brickman (Dale) of Waverly. He is also survived by many nieces & nephews.
