He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, James John McCullagh and Anna Patricia Rogers; his wife Cheryl Ann Edwards; his son James John; and his sisters, Kay Wojnicki and Chris Cronin.

His research focused on Native American Indians and their contribution to social work.
