He was predeceased by: his parents, Adolph "Ted" Nielsen and Elva Nielsen (Runestad); his siblings, Lynn Nielsen and Marilyn Voorhis (Nielsen); and his father-in-law Wayne Gibbs.

He is survived by: his wife Janet Nielsen (Gibbs); his sons, David Nielsen (Tara) of Cedar Falls, IA and Terrence Nielsen (Hannah); his grandchildren, Hudson, Mallory and Sloane; his siblings, Jerel Nielsen (Yvonne) of Fountain, MN, Marlys Austin (Simeon) of Chester, VA and Maren Nielsen of Fountain, MN; his siblings-in-law, David Voorhis of Longmont, CO and Mary Nielsen of Cedar Falls, IA; his mother-in-law Shirley Gibbs of Hawkeye, IA; his sister Carol (Gibbs); his brother-in-law Randy Winkey of Aplington, IA; his sister Jean (Gibbs); and his brother-in-law Bruce Pape of Maynard, IA. He is also survived by numerous cousins, as well as many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for a scholarship fund in his name.
