He was predeceased by: his parents, Ewald F. Gerken and Ann Gerken (Schumaker); his wife Elizabeth E. Hughes; his siblings, Donald Gerken (Ann), Adrian Gerken (Joan), Daniel Gerken (Joyce), Loras Gerken (Marlene), Lousie Coakley (Wilfred), Teresa McCoy (Donald), Joan Larson (Vernon), Dolores Gerken and Mary Temple (John); his parents-in-law, Henry and Marcella Hughes; and his brothers-in-law, Alfred Hughes, Cletus Hughes (Erna), Milton Hughes and Loras Hughes (Sally).
He is survived by: his children, Marcella Roe (Lee) of Temple Hill, IA, Gus Gerken (Tina) of Fairfax, IA, Mary Bridget Gerken (Patrick Jones) of Chicago, IL, Gabriella Young (Josh) of Iowa City, IA, Henri Gerken (Paola) of Queen Creek, AZ and Michaeleen Golay (Bryan) of Clarksville, IN; his grandchildren, Lee Roe III (Becca), Nathan Roe (Chelsee), Dylan Roe (Rachel), Garrett Roe (Alisha), Erin Gerken, Nicholas Gerken, Gerard Gerken, Alec Gerken, Terry Culbertson (Jennifer) and Scott Culbertson (Amanda); his great grandchildren, Winston Roe, Clement Roe, Edward Roe, Eldon Culbertson and Elliot Culbertson; his brother William Gerken (Donna Beresford) of Farley, IA; and his sisters-in-law, Rosalie Hughes of Cascade, IA and Marilyn Hughes of Dubuque, IA. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be given to St. Mathias Parish or to Salesian Missions, New Rochelle NY.
