He was predeceased by: his parents, John "Jack" and Florence Schaefer (Galloway); and his brother Steve Schaefer. He is survived by: his son John David Schaefer (Jill) of Lisbon; his grandchildren, Ruger Hutchison (Ashley) of Stanwood, Hunter Hutchison (Brooke) of Lisbon, Traysen Schaefer of Cedar Falls and Daylin Schaefer of Lisbon; his great grandchild Remington John Hutchison; his siblings, Gary Schaefer (Jane) of Carroll, Kenneth Schaefer (Becki) of Carroll, Linda Schaefer of Carroll, Janice Schaefer of Carroll, Lori Hill (Dave) of North Liberty and Amy Rydl (Mitch) of Carroll; and his sister-in-law Marilyn Schaefer of Carroll.

Those in attendance at the visitation and funeral service will be required to wear a mask and abide by all COVID-19 guidelines.
