With profound sadness, we say goodbye to Gary Atkinson of Burlington, Iowa, whose vibrant spirit touched the lives of many. Gary left this world on March 23, 2025 at the age of 80, leaving a void in the lives of so many people. He was predeceased by: his parents, James Atkinson and Inez Atkinson (Askew); his wife Betty Darnold; and his siblings, Mary Lou Overton, Barb Crear and Ricky Atkinson.
He is survived by: his daughters, Shelly Dean (Darrell) of Mt Pleasant, Sheila Orth (Warren) of Salem, Tina Barton (Terry) of Mt Pleasant and Carrie Atkinson of Gulfport, Illinois; his grandchildren, Cory, Whitney, Macoy, Tyson, Traden, Wesley, Chasity, Wylee and Logan; and his sister Connie Glasgow (Dale) of Danville. He is also survived by nine great grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Thursday, March 27th 2025 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the Lunning Funeral Chapel (2620 Mt Pleasant St, Burlington, IA 52601). A funeral service was held on Thursday, March 27th 2025 at 1:00 PM at the same location.
A memorial has been established in his memory to the Special Needs Foundation or Sunnyside Baptist Church.
