He was predeceased by: his parents, Loran K. Bates and Jessie V. Bates (Macklem); his brother Wayne Bates; his parents-in-law, Earl and Elsie Guffy; his grandchildren, Travis Bates, Daniel Bates and Stephanie Bates; and his great grandchildren, Katie, Matt Hochstein and Logan Wiebelhaus.
He is survived by: his wife Joan E. Guffy; his children, Lorna Arens (David), Robert Bates (Nancy), Rodney Bates (Carole), Julie Young (Mark Brewer), Lisa Stratman (Dominic), Duane Bates (Connie) and Bradly Bates (Becky); and his sister-in-law Loanne Bates. He is also survived by 25 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren.
