He was predeceased by: his parents, Clifford Sydney and Ardath Bernadine Schaper (Strader); his sister Sharron; and his son Stephen of Rochester. He is survived by: his wife Judy of Britt; his daughter Susan of Caldwell, Idaho; and his sister Martha Hand of Shepherd, Montana. He is also survived by two nieces and one nephew.

In the West Hancock School district, Darrell volunteered as an RSVP elementary school reading buddy and as a pen pal.
