He was predeceased by: his parents, Oscar Nelson and Amanda Nelson; his wife Lois Van Meter; and his grandson Michael. He is survived by: his children, Diana Mahoski (Chuck) of Bettendorf and Doug Nelson (Stacy) of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; his grandchildren, Amanda Mahoski of Clive, Christopher Mahoski (Twanice) of Urbandale, Nick Nelson of Aurora and Blake Nelson of Fort Collins, Colorado; his great grandchildren, Jilly and Leighton of Urbandale; his niece Dorothy Tellinghuisen of Boone; and his friend Katie Eatock of Boone, Iowa..

Due to ongoing circumstances related to COVID-19, a Celebration of Life will be held for friends and family at a later date to be announced in the coming months.
