He is survived by: his wife Shari Johnston (Zenor) of Boone, IA; his children, Amy Johnston of Nevada, IA, Michelle Cushman (Matthew) of Ankeny, IA, Jerryn Johnston of Portland, OR, Shalin Kowalke (Angela) of Story City, IA, Shaun Kowalke (Abbie) of Ridgeway, SC, Kenya Arrants (Cory) of Ames, IA and Kary Kowalke of Ames, IA.; his grandchildren, Hayley, Ashton, Jackie, Abigail, Britton, Olivia, Cory, Preston, Mila, Mya, Sammy, Calvin and Antonio; his great grandchildren, Beau, Koda and Mavis; his brother Steve Johnston of Audubon, IA; his nephew Jeremy Johnston of Audubon, IA; and his niece Leah Hemmingsen (Mike).
