He was predeceased by: his parents, Elmer Barnes and Nellie Barnes (Keeling); his former wife Joan Wenzel; and his siblings, Charles, James Barnes, Joanne Nystrom and Wilma Pollard.

He is survived by: his wife Helen McGehee; his children, Kevin Barnes (Kim) of Springdale, AR and Jennifer Best (David) of Urbandale, IA; his stepdaughters, Amy Shafer (Craig) of Boone, IA, Laura McGehee of Boone, IA and Melissa DeLong (Don) of Council Bluffs, IA.; his grandchildren, Brad Borst (Anna Marie), Mathew Borst, Andrew Borst, Olivia Barnes, Chris Shafer, Alyssa Shafer (Erik Brandau), Steve DeLong (Nicole), Mallory DeLong (Alonzo) and Alec Best; and his great grandchildren, Christian, Carson, Kennedy, Zoey and Maliyah.
