He was predeceased by: his parents, Harlan Cates and Florentine Cates (Ludwig); his brother Marvin Cates (Marla); his nephew Jamie Cates; and his niece-in-law Tesa Cates.
He is survived by: his daughters, Melanie Denney (Ron) of Breda, IA and Jennifer Dentlinger (Adam) of Carroll, IA; his grandchildren, Brandon Denney (Josie), Aaron Denney (Olivia), Makena Dentlinger and Madison Dentlinger; and his sister Pat Gosch (Steve) of Sac City, IA. He is also survived by many other extended family members and friends.
