He was predeceased by: his parents, Manvel Nelson and Lydia Nelson (Marcusen); his parents-in-law, Hans and Alice Sorensen; his brother Dale Nelson; his siblings-in-law, Linda Nelson and Virgil Sorensen; and his son-in-law Danny Funderberg.
He is survived by: his wife Dorothy Ann Sorensen; his children, Marcia VanderVegte (Lawson) of Hockley, TX, Greg Nelson (Donna) of Harlan, IA, Gale Nelson (Laurie Kroger) of Canton, SD and Karen Funderberg of Kimballton, IA.; his grandchildren, April Desroches (Daniel), Amber Joiner (William), Petrea Carlson (Jake), Preston Nelson (Shelby), Andrea Lowary (Cole), Kelby Nelson, Keaton Nelson (Eliza Green), Shawn Pottebaum (Lindsey) and Chelsie Ginn (Brian); and his siblings, Martin Nelson (Shirley) of Elk Horn, IA, Gary Nelson (Sherry) of San Marcos, TX and Janis Fajen (Larry) of Elk Horn, IA. He is also survived by 18 Great-Grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many friends.
