He was predeceased by: his father Donald E. Carns; and his mother-in-law Evelyn Elwonger. He is survived by: his mother Itha Ann Carns (Huff) of Fontanelle, IA; his wife Karen Sue Elwonger of Atlantic; his children, Ryan (Tara LaMere) of Council Bluffs, IA and Christen (John Schneider) of Phoenix, AZ; his grandchildren, Oliver Carns and Avery Schneider; his brothers, Frank Carns (Kate) of Greenfield, IA and Clark Carns (Michelle) of Greenfield, IA; his father-in-law Byford Elwonger of Springfield, MO; and his siblings-in-law, Diane Junge (Dennis) of Kansas City, KS and John Elwonger (Sharon) of Summerfield, NC. He is also survived by numerous nephews, niece, and cousins.

Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation according to John's wishes.
