He was predeceased by: his parents, Albert F. Penning and Elizabeth Penning (Stubbe); his stepmother Elsie Penning (Disney); and his parents-in-law, John and Lena Hook.

He is survived by: his wife Connie Hook; his daughters, Anita Osman (David) of Iowa Falls and Kristy Jahraus (David) of Pella, Iowa; his grandchildren, Elise, Connor Osman of Iowa Falls, Emily and Allison Jahraus of Pella, Iowa; his sister Vivian Mohwinkle (Ralph) of Aplington, Iowa; and his sister-in-law Beverly Lindeman (Larry) of Aplington, Iowa. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews, as well as many friends.

Memorials may be directed to the family, which will be designated at a later date.
