He was predeceased by: his wife Phyllis; his parents, Merrill Nichols and Gladys Nichols; his brother Lee Nichols; his niece Gwen Hill; and also, Audra and Marcella Gibbs (Sally).

He is survived by: his children, Fletcher Nichols of Anita and Jennifer Nichols of Atlantic; his siblings-in-law, Lillian Nichols of Fontanelle and Lans Gibbs of Greenfield; his nephew Chuck (Laurie Nichols) of Wichita; his nieces, Deb (Brandon Wetterberg) of Des Moines, Ann (Shan Duncan) of Greenfield and Jill Gibbs of Minnesota; his sister Edy Hill of Indianola; his nephew Lee Hill of Des Moines; his niece Angie Carson of Illinois; and his caregiver Connie Emgarten.
