He was predeceased by: his parents, John F. Kalsem and Hattie Kalsem (Hill); his son Alan Jon; his brothers, Jay Kalsem and Marion Kalsem; and his great grandchild Conner Carver.

He is survived by: his wife Sandra Anderson; his daughters, Susan Schaudt (Mark) of Slater, Lori Hill (Tim) of Cambridge and Julie McAuliff (Tom); the mother of his children Darlene Kalsem of Huxley; his stepdaughter Robyn Carver (Matt) of Maxwell; his grandchildren, Lucas Schaudt (Adessa) of Cambridge, Christopher Schaudt (Rachael) of Alleman, Joshua Schaudt of Slater, Melissa Shelton (Mike) of Cresco, Bryan Hill (Shelly) of Nevada, Joey McAuliff (Myra) of California, Taylor McAuliff (Kelsie) of Michigan, Natalie McAuliff of Illinois, Lauren McAuliff, AnnaMarie McAuliff, Alainna McAuliff and Michael McAuliff; his stepgrandchildren, Matthew Carver (Barb) of Bondurant, Crystal Swartzlander (Mike) of Zearing, Jennifer Kohlwes (Brandon) of Pennsylvania and Heather Ryan (Mark) of Colorado; his great grandchildren, Palmer Clayton, Julianne Schaudt, Quinn, Warren, Walker Schaudt, Taylor, Hannah, Dylan, Mea Shelton, Emma, Brynlee Hill and Gabriel McAuliff; his stepgreat-grandchildren, Dylan, Brock, Sammy, Julie Carver, Carter, Lily, Hazey, Max Engelbrecht, Paul, Swartzlander, Avery, Zoey Kohlwes and Grayson Ryan; his brother Homer Kalsem (Kay) of Huxley; his sister-in-law Bev Kalsem; and also Rick Ness (Loree) of Des Moines. He is also survived by 5 nieces.
