He was predeceased by: his parents, Lempi Marie Vertanen (Kangas) and William Vertanen; his stepmother Hilja Vertanen (Ylonen); his siblings, Wilho Vertanen (Pauline), Arnie Vertanen (Vera), Sylvia Pezzotti (Egnazio) and Bertha Vercoe (Gordon); his stepsiblings, Waino Ylonen (Connie) and Sylvia Woodbridge (Ylonen); his nephews, Daniel Vertanen (Sandra), Darrel Vertanen (Kathy) and Gordon Vercoe; and his niece Karen Vertanen (Dale).

He is survived by: his child Jerry; his wife Nina Vertanen (Ketola); his sons, Mark Vertanen (Jenny) and Bruce Vertanen (Joelle); his grandchildren, Jonathan (Jesse), Michelle, Kirsten (Andy), Kelsie and Samuel; his great grandchildren, Lincoln, Stella, Jack, Isla, Moses, Reya and River; and his nieces and nephews, Janet Helsius (Vercoe), Sharon Jeane St (Pezzotti), Eugene Pezzotti, Dennis Vertanen, David Vertanen, Christine Jefferson (Vertanen), Dale Vertanen, Kathy Vertanen, Kathleen Barr (Vertanen), Carol German (Vertanen), Pamela Vertanen, Claudia Smith (Vertanen) and Michael Vertanen.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Christ Community Church and Ascension Lutheran Church.
