He was predeceased by: his parents, William Nelson and Jessie Elizabeth DeTar (Bettis); his sister Ruth Hutchinson (Wiley); his parents-in-law, George and Marie Whitlock; and his brother-in-law Bert Whitlock.
He is survived by: his sons, Steven Charles (Niola), Scott Wayne (Brenda) and Stacy Alan (Vickie); his grandchildren, Erin Niola, Susan Caridad, Peter John, David Joseph, Joshua James, Deven Alan, Colton Charles and Elizabeth Marie; his wife Becky; his nieces and nephews, Laura Whitlock, Debra House, David Hutchinson and Randall Whitlock; and his sister-in-law Linda Whitlock. He is also survived by 3 sons; 3 daughters-in-law; 8 grandchildren.
A memorial has been established to the Trinity United Methodist Church or Albia FFA (Future Farmers of America) as Vernon was Chapter President and a lifetime member.
