He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Thomas and Geneva Thomas (Bates); his wife Lois Loretta Repp; his grandsons, Gerald and Derrick Thomas; his great grandchild Cole Thomas; and his siblings, Robert Thomas, Mimi Tharp, Gladyth VanDolah, Jeanne Frye and Donna Watson.
He is survived by: his children, Howard Thomas (Melissa), Janie Hendricks (Dan), Steve Thomas (Debbie), Tina Graham (Mark), Kathy Benson (Doug) and Brian Thomas (Carrie); his grandchildren, Angie Ford, Andy Thomas, Sarah Thomas, Melissa Podliska, Michael Alexander, Steven Thomas, Joe Thomas, Kayla Suarez, Travis Graham, Curtis Graham, Thomas Benson and Rachel Benson; and his sister Kitty Stafford (Buddy). He is also survived by 28 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild, several nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Welcome Home Soldier Monument in Albia.
