It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Esther Takakura Mookini of Honolulu, Hawaii, who passed away on November 1, 2023, at the age of 95, leaving to mourn family and friends. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.

She is survived by: her daughter R. Konane (Zane); and her grandchildren, Kaena and Keahi.

“I met "Kiki" at KCC when a group of us audited her Hawaiian History class in the early 1980's. She inspired us to write our family Hx and we traveled to different islands to learn firsthand about the Aina and historical areas of each island. My fondest memories were when she grieved alongside me when I lost my only adult child by going to Kalama beach to watch the moon rises and to share the beautiful memories we had with my daughter. Kiki will always be loved by me and remembered forever.”

“Mrs. Mookini was my Hawaiian language teacher at KCC back in the early 80's. One day in class she was suffering from allergies. I asked her about her condition and she told me it was from cutting her grass. From that point on I cut her grass for her. She would pay me with a nice lunch and a swim across the street. I grew close to her and would always visit with my family when returning from the mainland. What a wonderful person. She will be missed but never forgotten.”
