He is survived by: his wife Francis Shivers Johnson; his children, Andrea Kelley Johnson of Vidette and Gary Dean Johnson, Jr. (Carrie) of Waynesboro; his grandchildren, Gary Dean Johnson III and Carlyn Elizabeth Johnson; and his siblings, Cindy Peneranda (Danny) of Maryland and Kenneth Johnson of Waynesboro. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
