He was predeceased by: his parents, Hugh F. Bates, Sr. and Rose Libby Bates; and his brother Dr. Roger Bates. He is survived by: his wife Jenny Bates of Waycross; his children, J. Newton Bates, Jr. (Shea) of Martinez, Russell L. Bates (Stacy) of Blackshear, Hunter E. Bates (Ellison) of Watkinsville, Tiffany Kirkland Bowers (Chris) of Waycross and Duncan C. Kirkland, III (Kayla) of Waycross; his grandchildren, Jay Bates III, Garrison Bates, Ben Bates, Mary Lenon Bates, Henry Bates, William Bates, Jackson Bates, Eli Bates, Martha Kyle Bates, Everett Bowers and Gabriel Kirkland; and his brother Hugh F. Bates, Jr. of Athens. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and close friends.
