He was predeceased by: his parents, Isham Strawder Gaines and Dorothy Dye Gaines; and his brother Timothy Gaines. He is survived by: his wife Wendy Peavy Gaines; his children, Caroline Gaines (Kerry Parmer) of Charlotte, N. C. and Matthew Thomas Gaines of Watkinsville; his parents-in-law, Bobby and Juanita Peavy of Milledgeville; and his pets, Annie and Oakley.

Visitation was held on Monday, October 14th 2024 from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM at the Williams Funeral Home & Crematory - Milledgeville (1670 N Jefferson St NE, Milledgeville, GA 31061). A memorial service was held on Monday, October 14th 2024 at 2:00 PM at the same location.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations to Shriners Childrens Hospital.
