He was predeceased by: his parents, James Morgan Byrd and Gladys Bell Bennett; his wife Cynthia Ann Leverett Byrd; his son John Byrd, Jr.; and his granddaughter Haley D. Byrd.

He is survived by: his son Dewayne Byrd; his grandson Dylan Byrd; his nieces, Haroldene Davis and Teresa Davis; his nephew Robbie Daniels; and his brother-in-law William "Billy" Burke.
