He was predeceased by: his parents, William Ralph Thornton and Helen Pauline Smith Thornton; his son Lewis Thornton; his wife Shelvy Jean Cosby Thornton; and his sisters, Linda Shepherd and Peggy Ann Thurber.

He is survived by: his daughter Sheena; his son-in-law Timothy Ward; his sisters, Joan Shepherd (Junior), Connie Noles (Ronnie) and Shelia Thornton; and his grandsons, Billy Ward, Lewis Ward, Daniel Ward, Justin Ward and Lincoln Ward. He is also survived by one great grandchild on the way; several nieces and nephews.
