He was predeceased by: his father Larry Joe Grooms; his grandparents, Mildred, O. D. Grooms, Ida Griffin Commander and Roy K. Commander; and his cousin Joshua Commander.

He is survived by: his mother Susan Kay Commander Grooms of Valdosta; his daughters, Bonnie Lee Grooms of Valdosta, Jennifer Kelly Kilpatrick of Moultrie, GA and Elizabeth Amber Kilpatrick of Dallas, GA; his uncles, Jerry Commander (Angie) of Valdosta and Joe Commander (Ann) of Panama City, FL; and his cousins, Sam Commander of Valdosta, Kyle Commander of Breckinridge, CO, Shantel Perry (Drew) of Murfreesboro, TN and Jessica Rodgers (Dylan) of Valdosta.
