He was predeceased by: his parents, James Edward Cox Sr. and Louise Dunn Cox; his wife Martha Sandra Cox; and his siblings, Beverlee Larribee and James Edward Cox, Jr..

He is survived by: his children, Yvonne Sullivan (Daniel) of Fairfax, Virginia, Rebecca Parnell of Valdosta, Rachel Caswell (Charles) of Atlanta, Georgia and Jon Cox of Valdosta, Georgia; and his sister Harriett Ann Cannon of Cleveland. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews.
