He was predeceased by: his mothers, Winnie Otis and Ida Frankie Sanford Stephens; his grandson Stephen McCormick; and his siblings, Otis Stephens, Edith Michaels, Naomi Womack, Joe Stephens, Alice Weaver and Grace Marona.
He is survived by: his wife Carolyn Sue Stephens of Trenton, GA; his children, April McCormick (Wayne) of Ooltewah, TN, James E. Stephens (Shelly) of Trenton, GA and Joseph Edd "Joey" Stephens, Jr. of Trenton, GA; his grandchildren, Melissa Blevins (Ethan), Stephanie Fitzgerald (Travis), Kristen McCormick, Jessalynn Ziehr (Brandon), Dallas Stephens, Nicole Stephens and Brittany Hixson; and his sisters, Ruth Townsend and Martha Reed (Peter).
