He was predeceased by: his wife Dixie Lee Salter Joiner; his parents, James W. Joiner, Sr. and Francis Emmitt Joiner; and his daughter Michele Russakis Greer. He is survived by: his children, Penny Ewing of Tifton, Georgia and Randall B. Burwell of New Brockton, Alabama; and his brother Richard Joiner of Chapel Hill. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
