He was predeceased by: his parents, John Edward Cates and Isola Edwards Cates; his son Eddie Cates; and his sister Betty Allgood. He is survived by: his wife Sara Baldree Cates; his children, Charlotte Cates of Auburn, Michelle (Tim Barnes), Curt (Laurie Malcom) and Steve (Nichole Miller); his grandchildren, Ashlea McSwain (Windham) of Fairchild, AFB, Austin, Abbey Barnes of Camilla, Statton, Sara Grayson Malcom of Homerville, Carrington Douglas and Maddux Miller of Dupont; and his great grandchild Zain McSwain of Fairchild, AFB.
