He was predeceased by: his parents, George Thomas Yates, Sr. and Martha Dunn Yates; and his brothers, Pat Bohler and Johnny Bohler. He is survived by: his wife Vicki Yates; his children, Kelli Yates Faulkinberry (Jason), Dallas Nicole Yates, Katherine Hope Yates and Lamar Montgomery (Kristy); his grandchildren, Karlie Bree Montgomery and Joy Anna Faulkinberry; his siblings, Glenn Bohler (Connie) and Debra Heald (David); and his close friends, Lester Strother, Tim Shelton, Bubber Connor, Johnny Lewis and Darlton Raceway.
